Interview with Kameliya and Menka founders of the Event Factory Dubai

Hi Menka, Hi Kameliya, please quickly introduce yourself: Where are you from and when did you move to Dubai?  Are you married? … What are your backgrounds?

Menka: Born and raised in Dubai, I’m Indian by origin. I’ve completed a specialized undergraduate degree in marketing and then done a diploma course in event management as well. I’ve been in the events industry for 7 years now. After experimenting with working at ad agencies and exhibition management I have found my love in wedding planning. I’m married and have a 3.5 year old daughter.

Kameliya: Having moved to Dubai from Bulgaria 16 years ago, I’ve completed my schooling and Bachelors degree in marketing from Southern New Hampshire University. I come from a project management and events background and also had a short stint in banking. I’ve always loved anything creative and am always looking for avenues to express my creativity. I’m married and have a 4.5 year old son!

What is EVENT FACTORY DUBAI? When and why did you start EVENT FACTORY DUBAI?

We started working together on freelance events a year ago and then decided to launch our company. Since then there has been no looking back!

We only take on and work on one event at a time. We dedicate all our time and energy onto our clients and are available for urgent queries around the clock. We both attend to our clients from start to finish personally and are quite proud of the level of customer service we offer. Apart from that, we hate following paths that have previously been tread on and are always researching and looking out for new ideas and themes to incorporate.

How do you correspond with the future brides-to-be and grooms?

Depending on where the bride is based, we’ve used everything from email, phone and facebook to Skype video chats…we use the mode it takes to get the job done!

All! We’ve done Arab, Indian and European events with a smattering of mixed culture events too!

What are the specificities of the weddings you are organizing?

What is the average cost of a wedding organized in the UAE? Weddings ranges anywhere between AED 80,000 to well over a million. It depends of course on the number of events and guests, location and of course clients budget.

What are the new trends for 2013/2014 Wedding season?

Lately, every bride seems to be following the “Less is more” motto. Brides wants simple and elegant, sophisticated and under stated décor, dresses, accessories and so on. White and silver are the pre-dominant colours with touches of pastel. It’s rare to see brides asking for crystals and gold these days unless they’re going for the classic Victorian look, which is also a favourite fad.

In your opinion, what are the best ingredients to organize a wonderful wedding?

Truly, a wedding is made by the people and the energy. It always a positive attitude and smiles all around which turn weddings into hits. The other ingredients being well-planned schedules, brilliant food and the right ambience to hold it all together.

What are the common mistakes to avoid when planning your wedding?

Weddings are all about chaos and crisis management. Most common mistakes are: Vendors not delivering as promised: When planning is involved, brides need to check their vendors thoroughly. Many a times, vendors do not deliver as promised or when promised. We have witnessed brides running to stores last minute as their wedding gown didn’t turn out as expected or invites have spelling errors. Always ensure you hire recommended vendors through your planners or for DIY brides, do a thorough background check. Planning well ahead of time is the only key to avoid disasters. Do not leave anything to last minute.

What is your favorite Wedding memory? What is your worst Wedding memory?

Each wedding is unusual and special in its own way and we’re not saying this to be diplomatic but it is true. We work so hard on each wedding and have unique sets of memories attached to all of our weddings to date. As far as worst, there’s always hitch ups at every wedding but usually we adept at fixing them so nothing has gone drastically wrong so far! 🙂

What are the traditional wedding gifts? What is the most original wedding gift you have ever seen?

Gifts depend on the culture. Its usually sweets as favours across culture along with heavier gifts of gold and jewellery. The sweetest was a 5 day honeymoon in the Bahamas gifted by the bride’s brother to her, it was a complete surprise and was presented to her after the wedding along with packed suitcases for the couple and an airport transfer limo. She was so touched, we loved it!

I started off working in concert promotion and moved to corporate event management. When and why did you start THE PERFECT MOMENT?

I started the business in July 2011 as I could see a niche in the market for ‘one on one’ wedding management.

How do you work with the future brides-to-be and grooms?

I arrange an initial face to face meeting to discuss their needs. It may be that they require full wedding planning but I also meet many brides that enjoy contacting the suppliers themselves and want to manage the wedding but I will then offer an ‘on the day wedding planner’ service where I will be present on the day of the wedding to ensure all suppliers arrive on time, the venue is set as expected and guest management throughout the day.

What nationalities are your clients usually?

Mainly European but I cater to all nationalities and it is fun learning about all the traditions each culture has.

What is the average cost of a wedding organized in the UAE? This varies depending on the clients requirements. I would say though that a minimum spend would be 50,000aed and there is certainly no maximum spend….you can go as adventurous as you like, after all this is your special day!

White and pastels colours, loads of candles….simple but elegant.

In your opinion, what are the best ingredients to organize a wonderful wedding? Guests! Having your family and friends with you to celebrate your marriage has to be the most important element.

What are the common mistakes to avoid when planning your wedding? Don’t go with the first supplier you find, shop around, you need to fall in love with their style and their personal approach – they will play a huge part in your day (eg photographer) so feel the connection.

What is your favorite Wedding memory? What is your worst Wedding memory? Every wedding brings happy memories, it is of course a day of celebration and a couple declaring their love for one another infront of their loved ones.

I find that couples getting married in Dubai do not want material items as they may have to travel home with them if based Internationally so vouchers and ‘treats’ are a great idea.
